Patch 2.2.2 Goes Live with Masterworking Cost Adjustments

Diablo 4’s latest update, Patch 2.2.2, is now live, bringing significant changes to Masterworking costs—though players argue the adjustments don’t go far enough. The update reduces material requirements for early upgrades (ranks 1-4) and resets, making it less restrictive for players to refine their gear.

Material Costs Reduced—But Gold Remains a Pain Point

The patch slashes costs for basic Masterworking materials, including Rawhide, Iron Chunks, Veiled Crystals, Coiling Wards, Baleful Fragments, Abstruse Sigils, and Forgotten Souls. Blizzard stated the goal was to prevent these materials from limiting players' ability to Masterwork gear. However, Obducite (an endgame material) and Gold costs remain unchanged—and the latter is still a major frustration.

Players Frustrated by Persistent Gold Sink

While the material reductions are welcome, many players argue that Gold remains the real bottleneck, especially for those chasing perfect Masterwork rolls. Resetting ranks to optimize stats can drain hundreds of millions of Gold per item, a cost that hasn’t been addressed. Some players on the Diablo 4 subreddit express confusion, having assumed the "cheaper Masterworking" changes included Gold. Others cite the high RNG and steep costs as reasons they abandon characters each season—something this patch doesn’t fully fix.

Other Patch Changes: DirectStorage Disabled on PC

Beyond Masterworking, the only other major change in Patch 2.2.2 is the temporary disabling of DirectStorage on PC while Blizzard investigates performance issues. Players who want faster load times can manually re-enable it by:

  1. Opening the Battle.net Launcher
  2. Navigating to Diablo 4 and clicking the gear icon
  3. Checking "Additional command line arguments"
  4. Adding: -enableds

Looking Ahead: Season 8 Live, Season 9 Testing Underway

Season 8—featuring revamped endgame bosses and a Berserk crossover—is currently live. Meanwhile, Season 9 testing is in progress, introducing customizable Horadric spells. The new season is set to launch on July 1, giving players more ways to experiment with builds.
