With the release of Season 8 on April 29, Blizzard Entertainment is set to increase the difficulty in Diablo IV. This change follows player complaints about the ability to complete idle content while AFK, leading to rewards without the effort required. Colin Finer, lead live game designer, explained in an interview with PC Gamer that the goal is to reintroduce a proper challenge to the game, stating that “without a challenge, you feel like you’re getting free candy.”

A Major Adjustment to Significantly Boost the Challenge

The move to increase the difficulty has faced resistance from the gaming community, stirring a debate about whether the developers' intentions are at odds with what fans want. Nevertheless, the team is convinced that raising the challenge level will improve the gaming experience. “We’re confident that this added challenge will make the game feel more rewarding,” said Finer, adding that following tests in the Public Test Realm, they fine-tuned the difficulty based on player feedback.

Alongside the difficulty increase, Season 8 will mark a shift in Blizzard’s approach to content management in Diablo IV. Rather than simply adding new elements every season, the team intends to focus on improving the existing features of the Action RPG, ensuring steady evolution. With this strategy, Blizzard aims to introduce new challenges while avoiding any burden on the gameplay experience or slowing down players.
